What Is Academic Peer Partnering?
Academic peer partnering is a peer-assisted support initiative grounded in student solidarity, designed to foster the equitable, full, and active participation of students with disabilities and disadvantaged backgrounds in higher education.
Within the framework of this service, students who encounter functional barriers in attending lectures, accessing instructional facilities, utilizing academic materials, or navigating practicum environments due to individualized needs are paired with trained student volunteers, thereby facilitating their integration into academic and campus life.
The Aksaray University Unit for Disadvantaged and Disabled Students evaluates peer partnering petitions based on documented individual needs and coordinates targeted support processes in systematic collaboration with relevant academic units.
Eligibility Criteria
Academic peer partnering accommodations are available to enrolled students with disabilities and disadvantaged backgrounds who require peer support throughout their academic trajectories.
Eligible student groups include:
Students with visual impairments requiring navigation or accessibility support within classrooms and educational environments, or assistance in utilizing specialized academic materials;
Students with hearing impairments requiring peer assistance for in-class communication channels and academic interactions;
Students with physical or mobility impairments facing environmental barriers in accessing classrooms, science laboratories, or practical fieldwork facilities;
Students requiring personalized assistance in educational settings due to chronic health conditions or temporary functional impairments;
Students encountering functional barriers to academic participation resulting from other documented individual access needs.

Duties and Responsibilities of Peer Partners

Respect the individual differences, personal dignity, and functional autonomy of the supported student;
Provide academic access assistance through collaborative, respectful, and transparent communication;
Strictly uphold the confidentiality and data privacy of the supported student's personal background, medical conditions, and accommodation records;
Discharge agreed-upon support duties reliably, punctually, and consistently throughout the academic term;
Promptly report any operational bottlenecks or unforeseen difficulties to the Unit for Disadvantaged and Disabled Students.
Boundaries and Limitations of the Service
Peer partnering does not entail assuming academic responsibilities on behalf of the recipient student.
Peer partners are not permitted or authorized to complete assignments, sit for examinations, perform practical requirements, or make academic decisions in lieu of the student.
The explicit objective of this service is to cultivate autonomous learning and personal self-efficacy, thereby enabling students to engage effectively and independently in their higher education trajectories.
Application and Matching Workflow
Students requiring peer partnering assistance may submit an official petition to the Aksaray University Unit for Disadvantaged and Disabled Students. Applications are reviewed based on documented individual needs and the specific nature of the requested academic activities.
Application: The student submits a formal application detailing the targeted courses, laboratory sessions, or academic activities where peer assistance is requested.
Needs Assessment: Comprehensive appraisal of the student’s functional requirements and the operational scope of the needed support.
Peer Matching: Coordinated identification and assignment of an appropriate volunteer peer partner from the institutional volunteer registry.
Implementation: Operational delivery of peer support aligned with the recipient student’s academic schedule and the volunteer partner’s availability.
Monitoring and Review: Longitudinal evaluation of accommodation efficacy, with structural adjustments instituted as required.
