What Is Peer Note-Taking Support?

Peer note-taking support is an academic accommodation service designed to foster the equitable, full, and effective participation of students who encounter functional barriers in transcribing lectures or following instructional content due to individual special needs.

Within the scope of this provision, the primary objective is to record core lecture content that the student faces difficulty accessing or documenting in real time, converting it into structured written or electronic notes, and delivering it in an accessible format tailored to the student’s needs.

The Aksaray University Unit for Disadvantaged and Disabled Students evaluates petitions based on individualized functional needs and systematically coordinates the implementation process in close collaboration with relevant academic units.

Eligibility Criteria

Peer note-taking accommodations are available to enrolled students experiencing documented functional difficulties in taking real-time notes or sustaining simultaneous lecture engagement due to individual needs.

Eligible student groups include:

  • Students with visual impairments,

  • Students with hearing impairments who face difficulty sustaining simultaneous lip-reading/sign interpretation and note-taking,

  • Students with physical or orthopedic impairments that impede handwriting or computer operation,

  • Students requiring note-taking support due to specific learning difficulties, attention deficits, or related neurodevelopmental differences,

  • Students experiencing functional note-taking limitations resulting from chronic illnesses or temporary medical conditions.

Note: Eligibility for note-taking accommodations is determined not merely by diagnostic categorization or disability label, but primarily through a comprehensive evaluation of the student's functional limitations and documented educational access requirements within the learning environment.

Duties and Responsibilities of Peer Note-Takers

  • Documenting Instructional Content: Accurately, legibly, and systematically transcribing core instructional content, central concepts, theoretical explanations, and key emphasis points delivered during class sessions.

  • Timely Dissemination: Sharing finalized lecture notes in a timely manner and in accessible digital or physical formats that correspond directly to the supported student’s access requirements.

  • Confidentiality and Student Rights: Strictly maintaining the privacy and confidentiality of the supported student’s personal data, health-related records, and accommodation profile in adherence to institutional privacy regulations.

  • Consistent and Responsible Attendance: Fulfilling attendance requirements and pedagogical responsibilities reliably to maintain continuity across the academic term.

How to Apply for Peer Note-Taking Support

Students requiring note-taking assistance may submit an official petition to the Aksaray University Unit for Disadvantaged and Disabled Students.

Workflow:

  1. Application: The student submits a formal petition designating the specific courses for which note-taking accommodations are requested.

  2. Needs Assessment: Systematic appraisal of the student’s functional barriers in instructional documentation and determination of appropriate accommodation parameters.

  3. Identification of Note-Takers: Identification and assignment of qualified peer note-takers through coordinated efforts with course instructors and department chairs.

  4. Service Implementation: Transcribed lecture notes are systematically delivered to the recipient student in the approved accessible format.

  5. Monitoring and Evaluation: Ongoing review of accommodation efficacy in satisfying curricular needs, with procedural modifications introduced as warranted.
